Dog Friendly Motel Yeppoon – In the heart of the Capricorn Coast, Yeppoon is a fantastic dog-friendly beach to visit with your pooch. Located 30 minutes north of Rockhampton and less than 8 hours north of Brisbane, discover what it has to offer by visiting Yeppoon in Queensland with a dog.
One of the highlights of Yeppoon and the Capricorn Coast are the many beautiful beaches that stretch between Yeppoon and Emu Park to the south.

Fortunately, the default policy for beaches in the Livingstone Shire region is that dogs are allowed on all beaches before 8:00 a.m. and after 4:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Almost all beaches in the area are dog friendly!

During my research, I didn’t find a dog-free beach, although the beaches of Byfield National Park to the north certainly weren’t.
At the time of my visit in 2021, the tourism website stated that Yeppoon Main Beach, Emu Park Beach and Cooee Bay Beach were not allowed to bring dogs. However, I can confirm that Cooee Bay Beach had the usual signs to allow dogs before 8am and after 4pm, but neither Yeppoon Main Beach nor Emu Park Beach prohibited dogs. In the latter two, dogs are allowed on a leash, but avoid protected areas.
There are two beaches with different rules: Farnborough Beach in Bangalee and Fishermans Beach in Emu Park. On both beaches, dogs are allowed off-leash all day, but not on weekends or public holidays when they must be on a leash.
The Farnborough Beach clean zone is located between Bangalee boat ramp and Barwells Creek, with easy access to Hinz Avenue, close to 4x4s. At Fisherman’s Beach, the off-leash area begins 150 yards north of the boathouse, and surfboards are allowed in that direction for the first time.

Although beach problems are rare in the south, the beach can be dangerous during the summer months and one should be aware of the sea turtle nesting season from October to March. If turtles are present, keep your distance from leashed dogs or leave the beach altogether.
As well as visiting the local beaches, consider these welcome ideas for your Yeppoon holiday…
One of the highlights of a visit to Yeppoon is Great Keppel Island. With great beaches, swimming and snorkelling, it’s a great day out for the whole family and luckily they welcome dogs too.
There are two boat options to Great Keppel Island, both dog friendly. We traveled with Keppel Konnections, which allows dogs on board for free. Our dog does not need to be muzzled, unlike that of the ship Magnetic Island.

There are also many Freedom Fast Cats that charge $5 for small dogs and $10 for large dogs. Both ferries take 30 minutes and operate on the same schedule.
Once you arrive on Keppel Island, you will notice that there are no signs on the beaches indicating whether dogs are allowed or not. However, the island is part of Livingstone County, as is Yeppoon, and it appears that dogs are not allowed on the beaches, and must be on a lead before 8am and after 4pm. There is no mention of Great Keppel Island on their website.
The boat drops you directly on the sand of the island’s main resort, Fishermans Beach. I recommend walking to the south end of the beach, where there is a short path to nearby beaches including Shelving Beach.
Shelving Beach is one of the most popular snorkeling beaches on the island and certainly the easiest to visit if you don’t have your own boat. It’s a 5-10 minute walk, although the last part of the way is a bit difficult, especially if you wear braces like us! There are swimming places on both sides of the beach. I liked the port side area which was easy to access when the tide was low.

If you brought your own tour, I recommend taking a tour of Shelving Beach, Monkey Beach, and Long Beach. Monkey Beach is said to offer better snorkeling, but we ran out of time to visit it. However, we arrive at Long Beach, a beautiful long and quiet beach. We had the beach almost to ourselves (and may have left our dog). The east end is actually a nudist beach, although it was empty when we visited.
Note that the walking trails on Great Keppel Island are not well maintained as the main center of the island has been closed for years. It may be best to stick to the trails starting at the end of Fishermans Beach or ask local staff for directions.
If you take the Keppel Konnection ferry to the island, you can also have lunch and drinks at the Great Keppel Island Hideaway. Definitely worth it and our burgers and fries were delicious. However, the walk to the bistro at the north end of Fishermans Beach will take some time if you want to maximize your time exploring the island.
The Great Keppel Island Hideaway Bistro is always outdoors and dog friendly with plenty of water bowls. Although I noticed that no dogs passed this sign when leaving, I’m not sure which section this refers to.

Unfortunately, most accommodation on Great Keppel Island does not allow dogs, so it is best visited on a day trip. If you want to stay a night or two, find out if there are any resorts that allow dogs.
If you want to enjoy the beauty of the region’s coastline without getting your feet wet, the Yeppoon Foreshore is popular with walkers and dogs. Take your time, there are plenty of picnic benches and benches along the way, not to mention the generally dog-friendly restaurant opposite the beach.
Dogs should be leashed, have plenty of treats to pick up after your dog, and plenty of trash cans and bags. Note that dogs are not allowed in Yeppoon Lagoon (but they can walk behind it) and Keppel Kraken water play area.
Unfortunately, many other coastal walks in the area, such as the Bluff Point Scenic Walk and the trail to Fan Rock Lookout, are located in small areas of the Capricorn Coast National Park.

Emu Park is just a 15-minute drive south of Yeppoon. Along the shoreline of Fisherman’s Beach are two historic sites. On the hill above the ship stands the Singing Ship Statue, a memorial dedicated to Captain Cook in 1970. Hear it sing when the wind blows.
Next to the singing boat is the nearby Anzac Memorial Walk. This memorial and short walk was erected to coincide with the centenary of the First World War and is a sad place to visit. Under a large shelter are details of the war, including the involvement of Queenslanders.
Leashed dogs are welcome on the sidewalk and in the nearby park, although the area is treated with the respect it deserves.
If you’re interested in history, head inland to Rockhampton. One of Central Queensland’s premier towns, the town is home to a collection of magnificent historic buildings.
Dog Friendly Rockhampton: Visiting With A Dog
Some of the major buildings include the Custom House, the Criterion Hotel, the Rockhampton Post Office and several courthouses. Most of the listed buildings are on the riverside in Quay Street, while the post office and courthouse are further back on East Street.
The Riverbank area off Quay Street has recently been renovated and is a great place for a walk along the Fitzroy River, with plenty of shade trees. Just keep your dog on a leash.
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in Rockhampton’s main botanic gardens, and unsurprisingly the nearby pet store. However, head to Kershaw Gardens in North Rockhampton, where dogs are welcome.
The most prominent part of the gardens is the waterfall area, where there are numerous artificial waterfalls flowing into the beautiful swimming pool below, surrounded by lush palm trees. The Cascade area is located close to the High Street car park.

Unfortunately, some parts of the garden, such as the marsh, still need to be revitalized after being badly damaged by a storm.
Dogs are allowed on leads at Kershaw Gardens. There is a no dog zone near the Dowling Street car park, which we did not have the opportunity to see, at the Charles Street car park there is a small secure car park with active devices.
The Yeppoon area has a dog park called Olive Dorey Park on Clayton Road in Lammermoor. It has three different rods and one with the pressure device. The other two areas have plenty of shade and seating.
If you are visiting Rockhampton, there are many dog parks dotted around the town, some of which are fenced.
