Best Dog Friendly Bay Area Hikes – We recently returned to the Bay Area and were surprised to see how many “popular” hikes are not dog friendly! The general rule is that it’s dog friendly unless it’s a national park, but that’s not the case here. Since then, we’ve looked at all the dog-friendly trails in the Bay Area.
Growing up in the Bay Area, I’ve always been grateful for the many walks we have here. It is blessed with wonderful weather throughout the year. I’ve rounded up my favorite hiking trails in San Jose.

One of the reasons Santa Cruz is such a popular tourist destination is its proximity to popular hiking trails. In the Santa Cruz Mountains, they extend past the desert and 2,000 feet of elevation to the ocean.

Dog Friendly Hikes Along California’s Central Coast
Mount Shasta is a spectacular outdoor area about 5 hours north of San Francisco. For more advanced travelers, there are more casual resorts and dog-friendly options. Today I want to bring you a guide to the best dog walks in the Bay Area. If you love friends who enjoy the beautiful views and scenery of Northern California, this list will show you the best places to hike near San Francisco. On a peninsula in Marin County, the waterfall juts out into the Pacific Ocean that surrounds you. I have also included a map.
Given how much San Francisco Bay Area residents love their dogs, there are plenty of dog-friendly hikes near the city. Whether you’re visiting Marin County, the East Bay, the Peninsula, or elsewhere, the Bay Area is spoiled for choice when it comes to dog walking.

Dog Friendly Hikes In The Bay Area
Topping the list of best dog hikes in the Bay Area is the Cataract Trail in the North Bay. Four-legged friends are welcome here, and it’s a popular place to hang out after a big storm.
Located off Fairfax-Bolinas Road in Stinson Beach, it is located in the Mount Tamalpais watershed. A protected mountain area known for its rivers, lakes and sequoia trees.
Cataract Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in Marin County and the Bay Area. It has a narrow forest trail that hugs small waterfalls below the Cataract River.
The trail is challenging, climbing uneven stone steps and crossing narrow footbridges, as well as significant elevation gain. If you go after a heavy rain (autumn is best), that means your dog’s paws are muddy too (and mud can be everywhere).
Trees And Tents
Cataracts can be reversible or recurrent. The first is about 3 miles (1.5 miles each way) on Cataract Road. This includes an elevation gain of approximately 1,055 feet.
The round trip is about 7.5 miles on various trails. This involved an elevation gain of approximately 1,985 feet. For more information, you can see maps of both routes in my Cataract Avenue Walk blog post.
How long it takes to walk depends on your fitness level and how fast you and your dog want to walk. It takes 2-3 hours to cover 3 miles and 3.5-5 hours to cover 7.5 miles. If you are in good shape, you can do it faster. If your dog is a slow walker, it may take longer.
You can do this hike at any time of the year, but since the waterfall is the main attraction, it is best to do it after heavy rains. In Marin County, that usually means the winter months. If your trip coincides with stormy weather, you can see autumn at its best.
Discover The Most Scenic Dog Walks In The Uk
Mount Montara is on the list of best dog hikes in the Bay Area. McNee Ranch State Park and San Pedro Valley Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains are great places to enjoy the outdoors and enjoy nature in San Mateo County, California.
This mountain rises to a height of 1,898 feet above sea level. Nearby are hiking trails leading to North Peak and other destinations in and around the Montara State Coast. It’s a great day trip from San Francisco.
Mount Montara is located in the South Pacific Ocean. It covers an area of 690 hectares and is open from 8 am to sunset. There are several walks you can take here, all of which are dog-friendly. Distances and challenges vary, so there are options for every fitness level.
If you want an easy walk, the 1 kilometer Gray Whale Trail is the best choice. This will take you from Gray Kite Cove State Beach to Montana State Beach and Highway 1.
Dog Friendly Places In Slo Cal
After a short hill at the beginning, the road is relatively flat and has great views along the coast. The road is located along the coast, so you can enjoy the view of the sea during the trip.
If you and your dog want something more challenging, you can start at the Gray Whale Cave Trail and continue to the North Peak Access Trail or the Old San Pedro Mountain Trail. They both involve gradual climbing, so they are more difficult (but not nearly as difficult) than the Gray Whale Cave trail.
The first is a fire road, so the road is wide. The hike is 6.9 miles one way and takes you to the top of Mount Montara. From below you can admire the wonderful views of the coast and the bay.
The latter has more twists and turns, but it’s a great option. This trail leads to the Pacific Ocean and crosses the North Summit Access Road and joins at a certain point. If you want, you can turn off the main road to get to the North Peak. 3.2 miles one way.
Best Places To Hike In The Bay Area
Finally, Mount Montara is a slightly more challenging trail that starts at San Pedro Valley County Park and leads to the North Peak Access Trail. From there you can follow the path to the top of the mountain. 2.1 miles one way.

Oakwood Valley is next on the list of dog-friendly hikes in the Bay Area. If you and your dog want to get outdoors in Marin County, this moderately difficult hike is perfect.
This trail is dog friendly and not as steep as other trails in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
