Dog Friendly Vacations Ny – Long Island, New York is known for its beautiful beaches and good schools. A little known fact is that it is very suitable for dogs. That’s not to say there aren’t some great places to enjoy with your dog around Long Island. But in Montauk, New York, just east of Long Island, there’s a great vacation spot for dogs. This is one of the few places on Long Island where you can find beautiful and fun places to hang out with your dog.

Montauk is on the east end of Long Island, I mean the end. You can find t-shirts, bumper stickers and “MONTAUK. You’ll see other items that say THE END because Montauk Point marks the end of Long Island. Stop at Montauk Point and you’re miles from land, in the open Atlantic.

One of Montauk Point’s main attractions is the historic 200-year-old lighthouse. For a fee, visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse and look out over the Atlantic Ocean and all of Montauk. As you head east toward Montauk, you’ll pass through a posh area known as The Hamptons. Summer fun on Long Island just hit the beach! Sunbathing, surfing, jet skiing, boating, or hiking the dunes and cliffs are favorite activities of Long Islanders. Having grown up on Long Island, I can attest that Long Islanders love their beaches and waterways! Unfortunately, there are only a few beaches around the “Island” that allow dogs. However, Montauk has at least two great beaches that are open to dogs all year round! Unlike the neighboring beaches of Montauk, The Hamptons has strict rules restricting dogs to the beach.

Lamp Hero was a military base before being turned over to the New York City Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in the 1980s, and was even used as an artillery training range during the Revolutionary War! Nope, we didn’t find any cannonballs other than the pool at the grocery store – LOL! Camp Hero is located along the beautiful Montaukcoastline and is dog friendly! We rested on the beach, admiring the beauty of the coast and slopes.

In the photo below, you can see the historic Montauk Lighthouse in the distance. We have to walk down a steep narrow path to get from the bottom to the beach, but it’s worth it!

The bluffs at Camp Hero are eroding and can be dangerous if you get too close. We enjoy its beauty from a safe distance.

During the American Revolution, Montauk Point was the scene of many shipwrecks. After the revolution, the newly established US government wanted to encourage trade with other countries. Montauk Lighthouse, the first lighthouse built in New York State in 1796, was born out of this need.
