Dog Friendly Vacation Spots In Texas

Dog Friendly Vacation Spots In Texas – Fall is the perfect time of year to enjoy an outdoor family vacation in Texas. It’s finally getting cold, but not so cold that you need to wear winter clothes. Daytime walks will not only be more enjoyable, but also safer for you and your dog. At night, the temperature drops enough to create a cozy fire under the stars, where you can snuggle under a blanket with your pup.

San Antonio is fortunate to have many beautiful places to visit within easy driving distance. Whether you’re looking for a full camping experience, a luxury cabin, or something in between, there’s something for everyone. If quarantine and the hot summer months have you feeling bored and restless, it’s time to pack your bags, hop in the car, and head to one of these three Texas-friendly vacations.

Dog Friendly Beaches In The South

If you spend any time on Instagram, you’ve probably seen these beautiful cabins located in remote locations across the United States. There are three outposts in Texas, all within easy driving distance of San Antonio: one outside of Dallas (4.5 hours from SA), one outside of Houston (3 hours from SA), and one outside of Austin /San Antonio (more precisely in Wimberley), about 1 hour away)!

Although located in the middle of the night, each cabin has a comfortable queen bed with great views of nature, a full bathroom with shower and toilet, and a small kitchen with cooking utensils. The best part is that Getaway is pet friendly and only charges $40 to cover the cost of additional cleaning! They provide food and water bowls, puppy sets, and even long outdoor leashes so you can tie your dog up and give him room to roam.

According to its founder, Getaway was created to “give people the time, space and permission to get away. Our tiny cabins in nature give you a break from the city, technology and work so you can recharge and connect with the people and things that matter. most important.

If you want to “get away” from it all without much effort then this is the perfect vacation for you and your dog!

If you’re looking for something a little more connected to nature, 13 Acres Retreat might be the perfect place for you! I first discovered this hidden gem while looking for a vacation for my husband and our 2nd wedding anniversary last winter. Set on 13 acres of wilderness, these beautiful cabins are located just outside of Dripping Springs, just an hour and a half from San Antonio.

Each cabin has air conditioning/heating, a small coffee pot, a comfortable bed with fresh linens, and beautiful views of the Texas Hills. There are two restrooms on site, but don’t let that put you off! They are beautifully decorated and kept clean! Other amenities include water coolers for refilling water bottles, sinks with soap for washing dishes and hands, and hot showers. However, this is a great outdoor bath but can be a bit chilly if you visit during the colder months.

There’s nothing wrong with staying at 13 Acres Retreat. You can walk around the property (note: there are no trails so hiking is required!) or drive and explore some of the nearby state parks, like Pedernales Falls. If hiking isn’t your (or your dog’s) thing, you can also visit several dog-friendly wineries/breweries within 20-30 minutes of your stay. My personal favorite is Shadow Hawk Winery.

If you’ve never visited Lost Maples in the fall, YOU are missing out. Located less than 2 hours from San Antonio, Lost Maples State Natural Reserve is famous for being one of the few places in Texas where you can see beautiful fall foliage. You have to get it right because the leaves don’t change until temperatures drop – usually in mid-October or early November. Weather in Texas is always unpredictable, but you can check the park’s fall leaf color reports here.

As the leaves begin to change color, the stray bunnies become a hive of activity! You should book your campsite well in advance, sometimes even a year in advance! Due to COVID, access is even more limited and you must reserve tickets (both camping and day passes) online or by calling the Customer Service Center.

I promise you, it’s worth the effort! Not only is Lost Maples a beautiful piece of nature year-round, but it also has more than 10 miles of trails you can explore, including a loop that runs atop the 2,200-foot mountain. 30 campsites have electricity and water and about 50 primitive campsites that you can walk to, many of which are a short walk from composting toilets.

If you or your pup aren’t really into camping, you can certainly turn Lost Maples into a day trip. It’s certainly close enough to get out and about for a walk in the morning and then come home in the afternoon. However, it can be hard to pass a night or two under the stars, especially when the weather is cool enough to curl up in a sleeping bag with your pup!
