Vacation Dog Kennels – Mercy is an avid world traveler. He flew with us domestically and internationally many times, most of which were in baggage hold. The thought of flying with your dog in your luggage can be terrifying. With the right preparation and equipment, you and your pup can fly safely.
When we travel with Merc, we use the Petmate Sky kennel to carry the dog crate. The bird comes in many sizes. Merci uses a medium size.

The chest can be divided, so it can be easily stored even when not in use. The standard basket comes with a plastic material so you will need to upgrade to a metal material.

I wrote down our contact information, including Mercy’s name and our international phone numbers, with a permanent marker. This way airline employees know how to contact us in case of an emergency. You can create a booklet with your dog’s name and contact information that you can tape to the box.
Before flying with your dog, it is important to make him comfortable in the crate. Take the time to work on training your dog.
For Merc, we use the Hero Dog crate insert. It is slightly padded and has a cover on the bottom to prevent movement. Pads come in a variety of sizes to fit any dog - we use a 36 inch pad for the Merc. You can also throw it in the washing machine so that it can be easily cleaned in case of any accidents.
This system has two types of stickers – live animal stickers and manufacturer’s announcement and feed water instructions. A live animal sticker must be attached to each side of the box.
Plastic Travel Kennels
If it takes more than 12 hours to reach the destination, IATA requires a sticker on the top of the bird with the announcement of the carrier and water supply instructions. This helps the airline know when your dog last received food and water. We use them on all our international flights with Merc.
Food containers should be attached to the cage and accessible from the outside. We use a metal food bowl that can be attached to the door of the Mercy box. These bowls can also be used as water containers. Pro tip – if you use this container for a water container, fill the container before you jump and freeze. This prevents the water from leaking and melts slowly so that the dog can get water.
If you are traveling longer than 8 hours or if there is a layover, Ziploc fill the top of the cage with food. Dietary guidelines for flight attendants should be included in the carrier’s announcement and diet guidelines.
We use a water machine similar to hamsters because it is not wet. I like to use the 32oz dispenser because it provides enough water for the Merci for a long flight.

If you use such a repellent device, it is important to teach your dog how to take from the repellent. We used peanut butter and chicken broth to encourage Mercy to lick the spout that was burning.
The plane requires the cabin door to be closed. This ensures that the door will not open during transport and is an extra layer of security. You will need four to six zippers to attach the door. I usually carry extras just in case one breaks.
In case of accident, the baskets should be in line with the equipment received. Mercy’s cage is lined with two potty pads under her pad. This ensures that the cage has an acceptable level that helps keep it dry. I also keep a few extras in my carry-on to help clean it up.
Mercy wears a leather collar for identification. The leather is easy to clean and surprisingly durable. You fly in products that have a collar.

Merci has a silicone Silidog pet tag for identification. I like this tag because it is quiet, but there is a lot of information on the tag. It has your name, our international phone numbers and your microchip number. He wears it to his collar on a locking carabiner.
Mercy dog tags are attached to her collar with a locking carabiner. This ensures that the symbols do not fall.
The Biotan Leash is an excellent choice for travel. They are lightweight, easy to store and easy to clean. You can choose the length, size and color that suits you and your dog best. I used a 4 inch ½ inch cable for the Merc.
Dog food regulations vary from country to country, so it’s important to check the rules when you travel. We usually collect food for about five days. This allowed us to find good quality dog food and it was time for Merc to change. Freeze-freeze nuggets are a high-quality food and one bag lasts about 5 days, making it convenient.

We have two of these bowls for Mercy – one for water and one for food. These pots have a hard plastic bottom and collapsible silicone sides. I tried other pots but they were too thin. These pots are easy to store and travel.
This is a once-a-month Merci serum and tick prevention. We will drink enough while we wait. Note that this medicine needs to bite before the flea or tick dies. If you are traveling to areas where fleas or ticks are common, it is best to use both credilio and some exterminators.
This is a regular intake once a month to prevent heart attacks. We switched to heartworm medicine because it also prevents hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and tapeworm infection. We will drink enough while we wait.
Mercy has a genetic disorder that requires her to receive a B12 injection once a week. Both require a prescription, which I also keep in a plastic bag at the bottom of my suitcase. If needed, these prescriptions can be filled wherever the pharmacy is located.

Bringing your dog’s favorite toys will help set up a routine and make the visit normal. If they have a favorite toy, it makes the new habit more familiar. We bring tennis balls or frisbees to Mercy because they pack so well!
