The most reliable snow on the slopes is found at the higher elevations of the Tredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass and Selwyn ski areas, especially in years when natural snow falls and resort operators must rely on artificial snow. Although none of these ski resorts allow dogs, they are not the only places to experience snow on the slopes.

In cooler periods with snowfall at low temperatures, you can expect snowfall in the nearby town of Jindabyne – perhaps once or twice a year. There may not be enough snow for skiing and snowboarding, but sometimes it’s good enough to have fun in the snow with your dog!

Some of the most popular alpine walks are within Kosciuszko National Park, particularly the various routes up Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak. However, there are also some great walks around Jindabyne.

The Easy Walk is a walking and cycling route that starts at Banjo Patterson Park in central Jindabyne and runs 3.5 km to Discovery Park – Jindabyne Caravan Park (dogs no longer allowed) near Tredbow Close.

Lake Jindabyne was created in the 1960s as part of the Snowy Mountain Hydroelectric Project, and today is a popular fishing destination. One of the largest freshwater reservoirs in all of NSW, the lake is home to populations of brook trout and rainbow trout as well as Atlantic salmon.

Fishing is especially popular in the summer months. Fishing is possible from the shore, but it is better to go to the lake by boat. If you don’t have a boat or gear, you can buy both a boat and fishing gear from several shops around Jindabyne. Of course your dog is welcome to come with you and can wear a life jacket.

On the Alpine Road, 110 km from Jindabyne to Hankoban, near the Victorian border. I thought the most beautiful part of the drive was the first part, when you went through Tredbo, with snow still high in November, and then you went through the Great Divide which is in fog.

It takes about 2 hours to complete the journey to Khankoban, where you can rest or have lunch. There aren’t many options in Khankoban, so maybe pack a picnic lunch.

After visiting Khankoban, you can return to Jindaby by the same route or take the longer route via Kiandra. (On our recent road trip, we actually went as far as Victoria.) I recently drove from the town of Cabanmurra to Kiandra, but if memory serves me correctly, it’s even more interesting.

It is about an 80-minute drive from Khankoban to Kiandra, near the Snowy Mountain Road junction. Then it’s a 90 minute drive back to Jindabyne. The total driving time of the car journey is approximately 4 hours 40 minutes.
