Dog Friendly Beaches East Lothian – This year we explored the legacy of English Heritage with our Annual Pass. When we went on holiday to Northumberland, we took the opportunity to catch up with my friend Jenny. She suggested we meet at Tantallon Castle, a historic Scottish site near North Berwick in East Lothian. With historic Scottish properties available for free or half price with English Heritage membership, this is a great opportunity to explore somewhere new.
Tantallon Castle is a historic Scottish Heritage Site near North Berwick in East Lothian. It was built in the mid-1300s by William Douglas, whose descendants held the castle for the next 300 years. It survived two sieges, but the destruction caused by Oliver Cromwell’s army in 1851 left it abandoned.

Today, it is far from abandoned. Its beautiful cliff-side location attracts tourists and while we were there, a couple took wedding photos. I can only imagine how beautiful those photos are.

It is also of interest to archaeologists, with several areas excavated in 2013 to 2014. From Tantallon Castle, there are great views of Bass Rock, where seabirds nest. Wildlife can be spotted from the castle walls, including swallows flying everywhere.
For children, this is the perfect place to explore. They run around the lawn, climb the tower and play together. Upon entry, children receive a goodie bag to make the tour more interesting, including some dolls, a torch and binoculars. This definitely made them more involved in their surroundings and gave us a chance to enjoy the castle.
After admiring the castle, we decided it was time to go to the beach, which we had been admiring all morning. Just a few minutes’ drive from Tantallon Castle is the dog-friendly Seacliff Beach. It was unusually quiet on a Monday afternoon during the summer holidays.
To get to the beach, drive on a private road with automatic barriers. After paying the £3 fee, you can enter the small car park, from which a short path will take you to the beach. The large, mostly deserted stretch of soft sand offers stunning views of both Tantallon Castle and Bass Rock.
