I was shivering in my light jacket at the snowy peak of Lake Louise. And looking at Charlie’s thick jacket, my traveling companion had never seen the mountain before.

We’re in Banff, Alta., on the final leg of our nine-day westward migration that crosses five provinces on our way from Toronto to Vancouver. Part of it is the husband’s work. And the second part is living in a place where there is nature. More than a novelty, I hope Charlie is inspired by the Canadian Rockies and frozen lakes. Because we wait with him. Drove over 4,700 km to new home.

Flying is scary for a human with a basic knowledge of aerodynamics. Charlie is a 10-year-old terrier with love and separation anxiety. And at 20 kilograms (about 45 pounds), he’s too big for the cabin. It must fly in an airline-approved container, such as a checked bag. in a pressurized compartment but need not be temperature controlled. (Assistance dogs are allowed in the cabin. But Charlie doesn’t help.)

The flight from Toronto to Vancouver takes about five hours. Does not include indefinite seating on the flight deck. And we signed a lease for July 1, when the WestJet temperature is not higher than 29.5 degrees, so Air Canada applies heat restrictions for pet travel on domestic flights. “We love Canada. Unfortunately, the heat is not a problem.” We are moving on after a severe heat wave in British Columbia. This is the worst weather event in Canadian history. Meanwhile, the temperature in the province reached 49.6 degrees Celsius.

Both the WestJet and Air Canada websites state that we are not responsible for the care or feeding of pets during airline travel. I wonder who is responsible for us, Charlie is sweet but devious. He loves Black Forest ham more than me. And he often stumbles on his leash to sniff every tree he passed. For airlines they are products.

Fortunately, airlines do not misplace animals as much as they misplace bags. But even one case is enough to shake the pet owner.

In 2013, in 2017, Larry the Greyhound died when WestJet flew Cooper, a labradoodle, on the wrong plane. And earlier this year, Air Canada lost Davy Billy during a search at Toronto’s Pearson Airport. He was missing for more than three weeks, before he was found unconscious. Davy’s owner has booked his first direct flight. But the airline changed the flight.

These are just some of the common problems encountered when traveling with pets. But we have to deal with a pandemic, and COVID-19 is not a friend of the sky. Travel restrictions lead to labor shortages and fewer flights leading to overbooking. Last minute cancellations, departure time changes and even plane changes without warning. What if we left without Charlie flying? What will happen if our plane is transferred to a non-thermally controlled plane?

My husband and I moved to Vancouver in July to live. Leave Charlie and his parents and their big asses. We flew back in October to bring him home. It takes a lot of time to plan a great Canadian dog road trip.

Can I Take My Dog To Canada?

“I’m like a dog’s administrative assistant,” quips my husband as he tries to make vet appointments, rent a car and confirm a dog-friendly hotel.

If you don’t have a car, traveling by plane is much cheaper. So, we decided to travel as much as possible under the COVID-19 restrictions. Because I have never traveled to Canada.

Before the epidemic, I often traveled abroad. I think Canada will always be there. I am relieved and strong looking forward to my retirement journey after seeing the world. I am in no rush to explore this vast country.

So, if it wasn’t for Charlie, I would never have seen the Terry Fox memorial in Thunder Bay. Left before dawn. Except people who walk their dogs. I may have missed the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg. and the famous Lake Louise, where tourist buses run idle. In another case, I visited the world-famous Gopher Hole Museum in Torrington, Alta., which has a diorama of gophers helping local farmers solve their rodent problems. And the transformation of a small town. It has become an international destination.
