What To Do With My Plants While On Vacation – Ways to water your vacation may be easier than you think. Houseplant care on the go doesn’t have to depend on your neighbor.
I’m going on a long 4 week vacation and I have house plants that need watering.
What To Do With My Plants While On Vacation
Outdoor plants that need to be watered to survive. I have no neighbors here in the country and hoping for rain is not a good option so I had to take matters into my own hands. Luckily for me, there are many ways to help aquatic plants during the holidays.
My Dad Forgot To Water My Basil Plant For 2 Days While I Was Away. Any Suggestions On How To Save It?
Houseplants generally need to be kept alive and thriving more than their outdoor counterparts. But don’t worry! Below I share some great tips for indoor and outdoor plants.
We really want our plants to grow while we’re gone, not just survive. So I feed them well a month in advance and trim the leaves of well-established plants a week before, so they use less water.
Try these methods first a few weeks before your trip. This is very important
Regardless of whether you use one of these methods, be sure to water the plants well before you leave.
What To Do With These Plants While I Wait On My Tank?
Place gallon jugs or dish water (depending on how long you’ll be gone) next to the plant with a piece of water or string and the other end in the plant’s soil. The water will diffuse from the pot into the plant, keeping the soil moist as it goes.
Check if it works before you leave. Sometimes the twine or type of material you’re working with will only partially finish… you need to change the type of material (make sure it’s natural fibers) or place the container higher than the plant with a shorter belt.
This is the easiest and most effective method I have found. Works for many types of indoor and outdoor potted plants!
Thread the cotton thread through the drainage holes at the bottom of the atomizer and place the atomizer in a deeper/larger container filled with water. The idea is to nest a smaller row inside a longer row…it helps to choose the same width, but one is deeper than the other.

Or make a nest with hollow holes inside the glider. If you can’t find an edge that allows you to stop it on the larger grater, use something to raise it high enough (brick, bowl, smaller grater).
Best for: Moisture-loving indoor and outdoor plants. It can be used long term for most medium plants. I use this as a way to water my plants regularly so I only need to water once a month.
Note: Larger plants cannot absorb the required amount of water with this small wire method. For larger plants, increase the line size to see if it works the way you want. Do this for plants that are prone to root rot or need dry or sandy soil.
You can buy investment boxes if you travel a lot OR you can make your own! I’ve shared a complete tutorial on how to convert your existing planter into a self-watering planter.

Best for: Outdoor plants, but can also be made for indoor plants. Especially plants that like to be watered from below.
Even your gardens can be “self-watering”. You can use sprinklers to water the plants from below. Here you can learn how to make raised garden beds for irrigation and use the same technique for in-ground gardens.
This is perfect if you are not a gardener but want high maintenance. It takes a bit of effort at first, but once it’s done, you won’t have to worry anymore!
Some of my tropical native plants love humidity and need a terrarium-like environment to grow while I’m gone.

Place the plant in a double-lined garbage bag (like this one), double it up, cover the container well with water, and tie the bag over the plant. Poke lots of holes in the bag so it can breathe and you have a freshly made terrarium!
A more attractive version is a bell jar that can cover the plant and soak the container with water an inch or more from the base of the plant.
Attention: Protect these “terrariums” from direct sunlight, otherwise you will cook the plants. You may want to place them on an aluminum cookie sheet or something that will catch the excess water so the water doesn’t run out.
You’ve undoubtedly seen water lamps and anterra cotta + tableware systems. They work great if you’re going to be out of town for a week or two, they’re pretty and decorative, and they can be useful!

Be careful: if the ends of the bulb are glued, it will not work. To prevent this, wrap it in some gauze before planting it in the ground.
Water conservation crystals are a complementary measure and should be used in conjunction with other irrigation methods for best results. If you plan to be out of town for a month or more, add moisture-retaining crystals with a secondary irrigation system.
I use Miracle Gro water conservation crystals and it seems to work great and I don’t have to water the house as often as I used to.
I’m sure if you’re reading this, you immediately think of a complicated and expensive drip system. When a timer is added, it’s definitely a garden path.

Flood home rooms! It can be set on a schedule or run the application on demand.
It’s pretty self-explanatory for your outdoor plants. A few inches of mulch will help retain moisture in your garden and is great with a secondary irrigation system.
But you can also “cover” houseplants by adding layers of well-drained peat moss or by placing a very damp cloth around the base of the plant and covering with a plastic grocery bag.
Note: Moss can be a beautiful addition to a potted plant! However, you don’t want to leave it in the cloth, plastic wrap, or mold for more than two weeks.
Someone Else Was Looking After My Plants While I Traveled. Is This A Classic Sign Of Over Watering?
This method was suggested to me by a reader and I have to say it is pure genius! It’s the easiest and most effective method I’ve tried.
Place potted plants in a container of water with holes in the bottom, or even better if you have a tub or line that gets tons of direct light. Do not add several inches of water to prevent evaporation. Water the plants as often as you like.
Caution: standing water can attract insects and flies, if you are away for more than a few weeks, spray the planter with mold and mildew. Buy natural herbs at the grocery store or mix 1 tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 1 cup of water and add 3 drops of morning soap. Shake and spray onto tub of water before adding plants.
Note: Some plants don’t tolerate too much moisture and need to dry out before watering…this is a temporary measure for these plants and you’ll want to dry out the soil when you return to prevent root rot.

Another great way to keep your garden moist is when working with outdoor plants that don’t have a drip system. You can buy a timer that turns the water on and off every day, or you can set the hose to drip slowly.
