Dog Friendly Vacations In Upstate Ny – Like many busy parents, I try to find time to take my daughter Zoe on a fun dog walk. Growing up in an outdoorsy family, my childhood was full of hiking and travel. I can’t wait to relive some memories with my fourth child. So when I was presented with an opportunity for a vacation last weekend from the Getaway rental company, I already had half of my hiking boots on!
I’ve always heard of people traveling to New York State, but I’ve never visited it myself. That changed in the spring of 2019 when I had the opportunity to stay at the Getaway cabin in the Catskill Mountains.

Along with my colleague Danielle and her dog Sawyer, we set out to leave the office and break out of our “normal” minds and head north to focus on the positive music and mountain air.
We started the journey to the house on Friday morning. It’s easier than our usual Friday morning to go to the office, actually.
The fog made up the 120 mile drive north, music playing for our ride and fresh air filtering through the car window. The dogs love to sleep in the back seat and Zoe even took it to make herself out of my shirt.
For anxious four-legged travelers, soothing flavors can come in handy, especially on longer drives, and we always have them on hand. I wish I had brought Zoes d up north with us.

When we arrived at our dog house, the dogs couldn’t have wanted to explore more and we took them for a walk around the house (or so they said they took us) before heading to our cozy little place. .
When we all entered our house, we were amazed by the fresh smell of the wood and the beautiful windows shining all over. The large queen d was covered with a fresh new sheet and a small amount of s’mores and a note welcomed us to our home away from home for the next few days.
There is a small kitchen with all utensils for cooking, a small kitchen with snacks for purchase, and a private bathroom with shower with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
After dropping off our bags (see what we packed for our trip here), we jumped in the car and headed north to Albany, New York for a cup of coffee and an early lunch. We had no intention of visiting Albany, but since we’ve never been there and are nearby, our inner explorers convinced us to tackle the state capital.
Two Paws Up: This Destination Is The Ultimate Dog Friendly Vacation In New York
After a quick coffee at Stacks Espresso Bar, a local, dog-friendly coffee shop with a selection of teas and coffees, pastries and a range of milks, we explored the city on foot and with paws.
Many of Albany’s restaurants, shops and cafes are chain and cater to children, and there is much for us to explore in this beautiful state! We walked down historic Lark Street, where antique shops and brownstones reminded us of New York City. Next, we went to the main part of the New York State Department of Education Building, which opened in 1912. We didn’t have a chance to go inside the building, but we admired the 90-foot-tall marble line in front. The dogs enjoyed playing with us in the nearby grasslands when we went to the Iron Gate Cafe for food.
Located next to the 1890s Holroyd Mansion brownstone, Iron Gate offers fresh food and vegan options as well as a beautiful, dog-friendly patio. It is a good meal with two good puppies, although with older or taller children it can be a little difficult because the guardians have to go through the open seat to enter the house and eat food.
I ordered the Vermonster sandwich – turkey sandwich with cheddar cheese, apple, lettuce and maple walnuts – and Danielle got a Buddha bowl made with baked sweet potato, avocado, spinach, broccoli, quinoa and tofu. We were halfway through lunch before it started to rain.

We packed the food, grabbed the dogs and tried to get to the car before the rain started. Pet care isn’t perfect, but it makes for a good time. We finished our meal in the confines of the train, laughed at the puppies’ muddy paws and messy hairdos, and headed south.
We were lucky that the spring shower was short and the rain passed us by in an hour. So we continued with our plans to explore Kaaterskill Falls.
The trail to Kaaterskill Falls is pedestrian. This is a simple dog walk that takes us about 2 hours, round trip.
We stopped in the parking lot on NY-23A, around the corner from the head. At the beginning, a small waterfall made a small face and beautiful landscape that lay ahead. Although the terrain is steep and rocky, the 2.5 mile hike is worth seeing. In two stages, the tallest waterfall in New York State, the waterfall is completed on the trail, giving us time to rest and appreciate our accomplishments.

Zoe and Sawyer are real troopers. I would recommend this walk to parents with dogs who are used to outdoor walks, but watch out for small dogs as their paws can slip and get stuck on some rocks. If you walk, bring plenty of water for the four-legged travelers and rest along the way to give them time to catch their breath (and yours, too!).
After the tour, we went to a nearby (free) Chinese restaurant, Fortune Garden, to take our food back to our cabins. When we sit at mealtime, we feed our dogs their meal. Sweet and Sour Chicken and Dr. Pepper are never happy with each other.
After all the mouths were filled, we built a fire to enjoy dessert: a set of s’mores waiting for us when we got to our cabins. Even if the kids are well behaved, I recommend keeping them on a short leash so they don’t get too close to the fire (and the s’mores chocolate ingredient is toxic to dogs!). As we toasted marshmallows, Danielle and I talked about the events of the busy day. we all know, it’s late and time for us and the kids to relax in our cabins for a well deserved sleep.
Waking up in the morning to a large window overlooking the pine trees is like a breath of fresh air compared to the view (and alarm) I’m used to! When I made a simple and easy Chewy Eats DIY trail mix bar, Zoe spent the time crawling into a soft blanket.
Dog Friendly Adventures In New York State
We all took a walk around the hotel to enjoy the view and the peace while our kitchen fridge was stocked with goodies. The walk was nice and quiet, and the dogs’ happy snorts and paws filled the air. We didn’t see many hikers near the cabins, but there were vacationers with furry four-legged families far away. We became good friends with the dog parents before heading back to our cabins to get ready for the day.
After unpacking the hiking trails and packing the backpacks, we headed out for breakfast. Following Getaway’s recommendation, we went to Circle W Market for fresh food and drinks.
This cute little shop has a small outdoor seating area perfect for furry adventurers, and the sweet and savory options are the perfect way to start the day. Along with a cold brew, lemonade, orange juice and matcha latte, we also had a roasted turkey panini, waffles and some avocado toast.
Before I adopted Zoe in 2017, I always heard that Pugs are usually not the most athletic dogs and get tired easily because of their short noses. My boy proved them wrong! Always two steps ahead of me – both literally and figuratively – Zoe led our four-member pack on a 5-mile round trip to Overlook Mountain.
Dog Friendly Lakes To Visit This Summer
Although less rocky and gravelly than Kaaterskill Falls, the trail to the top of Overlook Mountain is a bit more demanding. We have to follow ourselves to fight constantly, but the sharp air and fog fill us with whimsy and curiosity. And this curiosity will not disappoint!
